Going to college can feel exciting and represent the start of a new and great adventure.
It is a time of separating from your family of origin, learning how to manage your time, freedom, and a chance to formulate your values and opinions.
If your High School experience was not good, it offers the opportunity to reinvent oneself and create new relationships and friendships.
With the new freedom, it is also an opportunity to explore yourself and others, with sexuality, gender identity, politics, issues of social justice, and the use of alcohol and drugs.
If you come from a family where the adults went to college, they will often describe it as “the best time of their life,” “where they had so much fun,” “free from responsibility,” “figured out their career interest,” and “formed significant friendships.”
If you are a first-generation student, there are additional pressures and expectations. Going to college can be seen as an opportunity for economic advancement for your family, class, or racial group.
There is tremendous pressure from all sides, parents, family members, and even yourself, for the experience to be a good one.
Despite all the excitement, freedom, and opportunity, college students also face great apprehension, anxiety, loneliness, depression, substance abuse, and sexual violence.
The American College Health Association nationwide study recently showed that depression and anxiety among college students steadily increase with each passing year, and 83% reported mental health issues impacted their academic performance.
Since the pandemic, students reported increased depression, substance abuse, self-harm, eating issues, and suicidal thoughts.
You are not alone; you are not alone if you have experienced or struggled with these issues.
These are issues that I am very familiar with, experienced, and skilled in working with these issues. As your therapist, I work with you to deal with such problems and help formulate a plan to empower you to address them successfully.
